This time I have visited Drivelife Events for the 2024 "Bakkies and Bolides". An event derived from the Cars & Coffee phenomenon where all kinds of, cars with a story come together. Not neatly behind a fence or bollards, but simply driving, which is what they were made for. A concept developed by and for petrolheads, with the aim of bringing together a very high diversity of unique cars with their owners and thus reducing the gap between the different groups of cars. FIRST DRIVE: Porsche Macan Turbo - As Fast As A 911 GT3!

This is Porsche’s most important launch since the Mk1 Cayenne. Why? Because even as a decade-old model at the end of its life, Porsche shifted 87,355 units of its smaller SUV in 2023, just a few hundred shy of the Cayenne. But now the second-gen Macan is going electric, and the buying public hasn’t wholly embraced EVs… Perhaps more challenging still, while the last Macan was priced from £54k to £73k in the UK, the new one starts at £70k and runs up to exactly £95,000 for the range-topping Turbo model (which doesn’t have a turbocharger anywhere near it). Sure, you get more performance, but the last Macan was a (relatively) affordable entry point into practical Porsche ownership; the new one is only £600 cheaper than a Cayenne! So it’s electric, and expensive. Can the tech impress and the dynamics dazzle enough to tempt potential buyers? FIRST LOOK: New Rolls-Royce Cullinan – Upgrading The World’s Most Luxurious SUV

The Cullinan, Rolls-Royce’s controversial super-luxury SUV (at least to those who can’t afford one) is now its most popular model, and has been given a mid-life tickle-up. The changes for the Cullinan Series II are driven by the evolving Rolls customer, who is just 43 in 2024. And that younger customer wants, says Rolls, ‘bolder forms of self-expression’. On the outside that means new vertical daytime running lights, an illuminated ‘Pantheon’ grille and 23in wheels. Inside, the luxe is dialled up even more, with the likes of a bamboo-based ‘Duality Twill’ interior that has up to 2.2 MILLION stitches and 11 MILES of thread, while ‘Placed Perforation’ seats create imagery through the position of over 100,000 tiny holes. There’s also a Cullinan Black Badge model from the get-go, again determined by that younger customer: when the Cullinan was launched in 2018, over 30% were chauffeur driven; today, it’s less than 10%. There’s more power than standard, an uprated chassis, and no shiny chrome. Do the tweaks keep it a rung above the Bentley Bentayga and Range Rover?
